Singaperumal Koil History
Singaperumal koil history goes way back to chola and pallava days. The temple is also called by the name Padalathri Narasimhar Temple or Narasimhar Temple. It is located in chengalpattu district of Chennai, dedicated to lord vishnu in his Narasimha avatar. The temple was built during Pallava’s period in the 8th century. According to the inscriptions found in this temple, the lord vishnu is believed to be the incarnation of Narasinga-vinnagar-alvar and the town is called Sengunram. It is believed that after slaying Hiranyakasipu, Narasimha took a bath in the temple tank to quench his anger. Because of this the water of the tank turned red, the reason why the temple is called Patalathri, which in Sanskrit means red.
This temple is a rock cut image and was initially a cave temple. This was later modified by extending mandapam and gopuram. The rock cut part is converted into a sanctum. The temple has lots of inscriptions written upon its wall. The inscriptions are found in Tamil, Telugu and Grantha languages. The shrine of Ahobilavalli, his consort, is located in the second precinct. There is a shrine of Andal located to the right of the sanctum.The shrine of Garuda facing Narasimhar, the eagle mount of Vishnu, is situated around the central shrine. The roof of the sanctum has various images of lord Vishnu. The specialty of this temple is that the sun rays fall on the feet of Lord Narasimha during the period from December to January. Narasimgha has a third eye, like Lord Siva, which the temple priest shows the devotees during aarathi by raising the jeweler Thiruman of the Lord.

Singaperumal Koil history narrates the story behind the avatar of Lord Vishnu. Narasimah is one of Lord Vishnu’s fierce transformations among his 9 other avatars. Vishnu took this fierce avatar to demolish an asura king Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu prayed to lord Brahma and received a boon. He began demanding everyone to worship him and his own son was against him. He began killing everyone who refused to worship him, including his own son Prahlad. Prahlad was an avid devotee of lord Vishnu and he was saved every time his father tried to kill him. One evening lord Vishnu took the avatar of Narasimha, a face of a lion, human body, along with 4 hands. He killed Hiranyakashipu at the doorsteps, which was no man’s land. Later Prahlad’s prayers and songs cooled him off and he descended into the water of the temple tank to cool off, which then turned red in colour.

Morning: 7:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
Evening: 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Singaperumal Koil Narasimhar temple timings are from morning 7 a.m. to afternoon 12 p.m. and then again the temple opens at evening 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The temple follows four rituals at various times of the day. The temple follows rules based on thenkalai tradition, where the priest performs pooja and the ceremonies are performed 4 times a day in 3 steps including decoration, food offerening and lighting of lamps.

Singaperumal Koil pooja timings are from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm. There are weekly, monthly and fortnightly rituals performed in the temple.
