Naruto Series

“Naruto” is a Japanese manga series crafted by Masashi Kishimoto. The narrative revolves around Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who aspires to gain recognition among his peers and nurture his ambition of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. The series is divided into two parts: the first focuses on Naruto’s formative years, while the second follows his experiences in his teenage years. Kishimoto’s inspiration for “Naruto” stems from two earlier manga one-shots, “Karakuri” (1995) and “Naruto” (1997), which earned him recognition in Shueisha’s Hop Step Award.

Serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from 1999 to 2014, “Naruto” encompassed 72 tankōbon volumes. The manga’s adaptation into an anime television series by Pierrot and Aniplex spanned 220 episodes from 2002 to 2007. The English-dubbed version aired on Cartoon Network and YTV from 2005 to 2009. “Naruto: Shippuden,” a sequel to the original series, debuted in 2007 and concluded in 2017 after 500 episodes. The English dub was broadcast on Disney XD (2009-2011) and later on Adult Swim’s Toonami block (2014 onwards). Viz Media streamed the series on Neon Alley (2012-2016). The franchise also includes eleven movies and twelve original video animations (OVAs).

Viz Media obtained the rights for North American production of both manga and anime, with the series airing in various countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The series introduces a new phase with “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” focusing on Naruto’s son, Boruto Uzumaki.

“Naruto” boasts remarkable sales, with over 250 million copies circulated globally in 47 countries and regions. Its popularity extends to Japan, with 153 million copies sold domestically and 97 million copies abroad. Volumes of the English-translated manga made appearances on USA Today and The New York Times bestseller lists. Critics praised the series for its character development, engaging storylines, and skillful action sequences. Although some critics felt that the action scenes occasionally slowed down the narrative, they appreciated the manga’s integration of cultural references from Japanese mythology and Confucianism, all of which contributed to the coming-of-age theme.
