Carly Simon has struggled with a number of mental health issues, each with its own set of debilitating symptoms that manifested in ways that affected her professional life and also her ability to express herself. “Depression ran in the Simon family,” according to her memoir “Boys in the Trees,” with the singer’s father, Richard Simon, showing signs of mental illness and experiencing dark periods in childhood and well into adulthood. In her memoir, she also mentioned that she had a lump in her breast and had it checked by multiple doctors who said they’d watch over it. She finally visited a doctor who said he’d rather see the lump in a jar than in the breast, and the lump was identified as cancerous. She had a double mastectomy and also had reconstructive surgery.
We guess cancer mutation runs in the family for the Simons. Carly Simon had a week to forget after cancer claimed the lives of her two sisters, Lucy and Joanna, who died a day apart. While her other sister, former opera soprano Joanna Simon (85), died on Wednesday from thyroid cancer, Lucy Simon (82), a Broadway songwriter, died on Thursday from breast cancer. The Simon sisters (and their brother Peter) have always been arts enthusiasts, and they are descended from Richard L. Simon, the founder of the influential Simon & Schuster publishing house. Carly also lost her brother Peter to Cancer.
Simon had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer in 1997 and 1998.
Simon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on November 5, 2022. Due to a personal tragedy, she was unable to attend the ceremony. “I am humbled, shocked, proud, over-achieved, under-qualified, and singularly grateful to everyone without whom I really couldn’t be here,” said Sara Bareilles, who inducted Simon. Olivia Rodrigo performed “You’re So Vain” after Bareilles. Carly Simon’s legendary surprise concert at New York’s Grand Central Terminal, Live at Grand Central, will be released on audio and Blu-ray for the first time on January 27, 2024. The video was digitized, HD-converted, and re-edited. Frank Filipetti, a multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer, re-mixed the audio.
On June 25, 1943, Carly Simon was born. She is 79 years old as per britannica. She was born in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Her father was a classical pianist named Richard L Simon (co-founder of the publishing company Simon & Schuster). Her mother was Andrea Heinemann Simon, a civil rights activist and singer.
Carly had three siblings:
Joanna Simon, an opera singer, died of cancer in October 2022 at 85.
Lucy Simon, a fellow singer and composer died from cancer in October 2022, just a day after Joanna.
Peter Simon died in 2018 from cancer.
