In April 2022, during the 30th match of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer played a scintillating knock of 85 off mere 51 deliveries while chasing a massive target of 218 set by the Rajasthan Royals.

The KKR chase got off to a disastrous start as Sunil Narine was run out without facing a delivery due to miscommunication with Aaron Finch. However, the momentum shifted as soon as Iyer arrived at the crease and he formed a formidable partnership with Finch (58 off 28). The duo stitched together a 107-run stand in just 8.5 overs for the second wicket.

After Nitish Rana (18 off 11) was dismissed cheaply and Andre Russell fell for a golden duck, the Shreyas Iyer juggernaut continued with its own merry way. Iyer, with his innings comprising 7 fours and 4 sixes, unleashed an array of shots against both pacers and spinners. Unfortunately, during the final four overs of the innings, KKR lost their fellow batter Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 7). Venkatesh had been demoted down the order after opening for the team in previous matches.

Despite sharing similar surnames, the Iyer duo had no familial relationship. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma (56 off 31) and Ishan Kishan (29 off 21) once again provided an aggressive start, scoring 69 runs in the Powerplay, which was their highest Powerplay score in the series. All-rounder Deepak Chahar played a brilliant knock of 21* off 8 deliveries towards the end, giving the innings an ideal finish. However, Team India experienced a flurry of wickets soon after the Powerplay. It was the partnership of 35 runs between the Iyer duo, Shreyas Iyer (25 off 20) and Venkatesh Iyer (20 off 15), that laid the foundation for the strong finish mentioned earlier.

In terms of the match itself, Rohit Sharma won the toss for the third consecutive time and, going against the trend, chose to bat first. The team’s think-tank clearly aimed to challenge themselves against the conditions, which made sense considering Team India had already secured an insurmountable lead in the 3-match series.

Who are Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer?

Venkatesh Iyer, born on 25th December 1994, is an Indian cricketer who represents Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, he was asked to stay back in the UAE as a net bowler for the Indian squad. Subsequently, in November 2021, he was selected for India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) series against New Zealand.  He made his T20I debut on 17th November 2021, playing for India against New Zealand. He also made his international bowling debut in the final match of the series, where he returned figures of 3-0-12-1.

In December 2021, he was named in India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against South Africa. He made his ODI debut on 19th January 2022, representing India against South Africa. In January 2022, he was included in India’s T20I squad for the series against the West Indies. He played all three matches, assuming a finishing role in the lower middle order and scoring runs at a strike rate of 179.24. Additionally, he took two wickets during the series. On the other hand. Shreyas Santosh Iyer, born on 6th December 1994, is an Indian international cricketer known for his right-handed batting. He has represented the Indian cricket team in all formats of the game. In November 2021, Iyer achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a century in his debut Test match against New Zealand, followed by a half-century in the second innings, becoming the first Indian player to do so. He plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and serves as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. In 2014, Iyer played for the India Under-19 cricket team in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. On 25th November 2021, Iyer received his Test cap from former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and went on to score a maiden century in the match against New Zealand. He became the 16th Indian player to achieve this feat in his debut Test match.

During the bilateral T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2022, Iyer surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a 3-match T20I bilateral series. He accumulated a total of 204 runs with three consecutive unbeaten half-centuries.In March 2022, Iyer was awarded the Man of the Match after scoring two crucial fifties on a challenging turning track in the second Test match against Sri Lanka. His excellent form led to him being named the ICC Player of the Month for February 2022. On 9th October 2022, during the second of three ODI matches against South Africa, he achieved his second ODI century by scoring an unbeaten 113 off 111 balls.
