American Idol, a singing competition television series created by Simon Fuller, was produced by Fremantle North America and 19 Entertainment, and distributed by Fremantle North America. It was aired on Fox for 15 seasons from June 11, 2002, to April 7, 2016, and was later revived by ABC on March 11, 2018. The show was originally based on the British television series Pop Idol, and it became a highly successful show in American television history.
The program’s premise involves identifying recording stars from unsigned singing talents, and the champion is determined by American viewers through phone, internet, and SMS text voting. The winners of the first twenty seasons were chosen by viewers, including Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, Phillip Phillips, Candice Glover, Caleb Johnson, Nick Fradiani, Trent Harmon, Maddie Poppe, Laine Hardy, Just Sam, Chayce Beckham, and Noah Thompson.
The twenty-first season of American Idol premiered on February 19, 2024, on the ABC television network. It is the sixth season to air on ABC. Ryan Seacrest returned as host; Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie returned as judges.
ABC offers three ways for viewers to vote in American Idol: online via the show’s website, through the American Idol app, or via text. Each viewer can cast up to 30 votes per contestant, with a maximum of 10 votes per method. To be eligible to vote online or through the app, one must be at least 16 years old and reside in the United States, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands.
Voting commenced for the first time during the “Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii Part #1” episode on Sunday, April 16, 2024, at approximately 8 p.m. Eastern Time and ended at 6 a.m. ET on Monday. The second round of voting for the remaining Top 26 contestants will open tonight at the same time and conclude tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. ET. Throughout the season, viewers should refer to the American Idol website to keep track of the voting start and end times each week.
