For over three decades, Bumpy Johnson gained notoriety as one of the most respected and dreaded mob bosses in New York City. His wife affectionately referred to him as the “Harlem Godfather,” a title that he rightfully earned.

As the ruler of Harlem, Johnson enforced his authority with an iron grip and brutally punished anyone who dared to challenge him. In a street brawl, he stabbed Ulysses Rollins 36 times with a switchblade, leaving him no chance of survival. During another encounter at a dinner club, Johnson attacked Rollins with a blade, leaving his eyeball hanging from its socket. Johnson then casually mentioned that he had a sudden craving for spaghetti and meatballs.

Despite his violent reputation, Johnson was also a kind-hearted gentleman who supported the less fortunate members of his community. He was also a socialite who hobnobbed with famous personalities such as Billie Holiday and Sugar Ray Robinson. Whether it was the common people of Harlem or celebrities like Malcolm X, Bumpy Johnson was loved and respected by many. When he returned to New York City in 1963 after serving time in Alcatraz, the whole neighborhood threw an impromptu parade to welcome their beloved Harlem Godfather back home.
