Benji Alone Season 9 Illness: What Happened to Benji on Alone?

Alone Wiki

Alone is an engaging American survival competition series that airs on History. The show chronicles the daily struggles of 10 individuals (or seven paired teams in season 4), as they face the daunting challenge of surviving alone in the wilderness. Equipped with only limited survival gear, the participants document their experiences while striving to endure the harsh conditions for as long as possible.

Throughout their journey, they are completely isolated from one another and all other human contact, except for periodic medical check-ins. Should they feel the need, they have the option to “tap out” and leave the competition at any time, or they may be removed due to failing a medical evaluation.

The ultimate reward for the contestant who manages to stay the longest in the wilderness is a grand prize of $500,000, which increased to an impressive $1 million starting from season 7. Each season takes place in a remote location, often on Indigenous-controlled lands, providing diverse settings for the show.

Past filming locations have included northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina’s Patagonia, Northern Mongolia, Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, and Chilko Lake in the interior of British Columbia.

Benji Alone Season 9 Illness

On Day 24, Benji dedicates some time to sharpening and cleaning his tools before embarking on his next task—the fleshing beam. This specialized tool aids in the removal of fat and meat from animal skins. Benji skillfully employs the beam to extract as much meat as possible from the beaver hide, intending to render the fat for preservation.

In a surprising turn of events, despite already having a supply of beaver meat and fat, Benji decides to hunt a grouse. His first two attempts with the bow miss their mark, but he perseveres and triumphantly hits the bird on his third try. Expressing his gratitude to the camera, Benji acknowledges his fortunate success with the bow, never expecting to catch such a variety of game.

Later that evening, Benji prepares a meal using the grouse meat and some beaver fat. Savoring the flavors, he describes the fat as an explosion of taste in his mouth. However, the following day brings unexpected consequences.

Upon waking, Benji is plagued by a severe stomach ache. In an effort to restore the flow of energy within his body, he engages in a brief Qigong session. Assuming that his discomfort stems from overindulgence the previous night, he sets out to find some yarrow, hoping it will alleviate his upset stomach.

Benji locates yarrow near the river, but despite taking a short nap, he wakes up still feeling unwell. As the day progresses, his condition deteriorates, accompanied by a fever, chills, stomach cramps, and nausea. Though he manages to avoid vomiting, Benji clings to the hope that a restful night will bring relief.

However, at 2 a.m., Benji abruptly wakes up and vomits. The night is plagued by persistent stomach cramps, and he candidly shares his painful ordeal with the camera. By 6 a.m., sleep has eluded him entirely, leaving him weakened and barely capable of movement.

Recognizing the gravity of his situation, the survivalist realizes his time in the competition has come to an end. Despite his disappointment, he expresses deep gratitude for the opportunity to witness the changing seasons in Labrador and the invaluable lessons learned from his participation in Alone.

What Happened to Benji on Alone?

During Season 9 of Alone, Benji faced a series of challenges that ultimately led to his departure from the show. On Day 21, his gut pile attracted a bear, but he decided against shooting it, as the weather wasn’t cold enough to freeze the carcass. Benji completed his new shelter, feeling satisfied with its improved warmth and spaciousness.

However, on Day 26, he woke up with a stomachache, which he initially attributed to overeating. Despite trying to retune his body with Quigong and searching for yarrow to alleviate his discomfort, his condition worsened. Benji experienced fever, chills, stomach cramps, and nausea, unable to find relief. Eventually, he vomited and realized he likely had giardia, commonly known as “beaver fever.

With the illness taking a toll on his well-being and fearing for his survival, Benji made the difficult decision to tap out on Day 27. Although disappointed, he remained grateful for the experience and the knowledge gained from his time on Alone.
