Bloodhounds Plot

Gun-woo, a boxer, finds discipline and tries to help his struggling mother amidst the pandemic. He meets Woo-jin and forms a friendship with him. However, Gun-woo’s mother falls victim to a conman named Kim Myeong-gil, who runs Smile Capital. Gun-woo fights Myeong-gil’s men but is scarred and indebted to them.

Woo-jin, who used to work with loan sharks, tries to find help but is met with unethical conditions. Meanwhile, President Choi, a former loan shark known for his kindness, hires Gun-woo and Woo-jin as bodyguards for his granddaughter, Hyeon-ju. Although we yearned for Mr. Choi to exact his revenge, the fateful day of reckoning never arrived.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Choi’s desire for Hyeon-joo’s safety prevented him from confronting his archenemy. Yet, perhaps it was predestined that their paths would cross once more.

While Gun-woo and Woo-jin’s chemistry injects lighthearted moments into the story, the overall character portrayal lacks nuance. The series oversimplifies the moral complexities of the loan shark industry, depicting most lenders as inherently bad and only a select few as good, offering zero-interest loans.

It fails to explore the broader narrative of informal money lending and presents its characters in a one-dimensional manner. Furthermore, excessive reliance on exposition and the decision to replace more than half of the leading characters diminish the quality of the script.

In Episode 7 of “Bloodhounds,” the story begins in the hospital with Woo-jin undergoing surgery. The doctors express concern over his severe blood loss, fearing they may lose him. However, Gun-woo, who shares the same blood type as Woo-jin, decides to donate his blood for the operation. He persuades a nurse to draw as much blood as needed to save his friend’s life.

Meanwhile, Hyeon-jo, without informing Gun-woo, leaves the hospital alone, overwhelmed by the loss of President Choi.Gun-woo becomes worried about Hyeon-jo but breaks down in tears upon hearing that Woo-jin has come out of surgery and is in critical care. The episode then jumps six months ahead to June 2021, where Woo-jin and Gun-woo are living in the countryside.

They train rigorously and reside with Mr Oh, President Choi’s secretary. The boys express their desire to confront Myeong-gil, but Mr Oh opposes their decision. Gun-woo tries to reason with Mr Oh, explaining their intentions to help others and seek revenge for President Choi, Yang-jung, and Du-yeong’s deaths. Mr Oh, however, firmly denies them the opportunity. While visiting President Choi’s tombstone, Mr Oh discovers a letter from Hyeon-jo.

The letter expresses her deep longing for her grandfather and her belief that she brought trouble to Myeong-gil. Hyeon-jo states that she has left for Rome and has no plans to return, as the country reminds her too much of President Choi. Mr Oh feels saddened after reading the letter and eventually decides to meet Woo-jin and Gun-woo. He gives them the remaining 300 million won from President Choi’s cash fund and sends them off to Seoul.

The boys arrive at the apartment of Mr Oh’s granddaughter, Do-min, who has a quirky personality and teases them. After freshening up, Woo-jin and Gun-woo begin strategizing, and Gun-woo learns from the archery photos in Do-min’s apartment that she was an archer. Gun-woo believes their first step should be finding Jae-myeong, while Woo-jin argues they should gather allies for support.

They consider approaching Mr Hong Min-beom, the heir of the I-il group and Myeong-gil’s major client. Surprisingly, they find that Mr Oh has arranged a convertible for them, and they head to meet one of the loan sharks who had been conned by Myeong-gil’s men. The loan shark dismisses the boys’ proposal, stating that a few hundred million won is not worth risking his life for.

Gun-woo and Woo-jin then meet Mr Moon and reveal the misdeeds of Myeong-gil and his men. They discover that Mr Moon was also a victim of Myeong-gil’s schemes, manipulated into signing a contract with hidden terms and conditions. Myeong-gil’s henchmen ransacked Mr Moon’s office for money and brutally assaulted him for failing to pay.

Mr Moon struggles to cope with the death of President Choi. After meeting Mr Moon, Gun-woo and Woo-jin pay a visit to Jae-myeong.
