Who is Cody Ramsey?       

Cody Ramsey, who is of Macedonian and Indigenous descent, is a professional rugby league player for the St. George Illawarra Dragons in the National Rugby League. He primarily plays as a winger or fullback. Ramsey started his junior rugby league career at Cabonne United. In 2020, he made his debut appearance in the NRL Nines tournament where he emerged as the joint top try-scorer with four tries and was also named in the team of the tournament. During his first game in the NRL season, which was in round 18 in 2020, Ramsey scored two tries in the first half, one of which he scored on his first touch, but unfortunately, St. George Illawarra lost 8-37 to Canberra.

According to Dragons general manager Ben Haran, Cody was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel condition, towards the end of 2022. Due to this condition, he had to stay in the hospital for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, the condition required significant bowel surgery, which was successful, but it will necessitate several follow-up procedures throughout the upcoming season. Consequently, Cody won’t be able to participate in the NRL for the 2024 season. The root cause of the disease is said to be an immune system malfunction, resulting in ulcers and swelling in the digestive tract and bowel. The primary focus of the Dragons will be on Cody’s medical rehabilitation and overall well-being in the initial phase.

Did Cody Ramsey retire?

Due to ulcerative colitis, Cody Ramsey, the Dragons’ fullback, will be unable to play rugby league for the 2024 season. According to reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, the club informed Ramsey that he would not be able to play rugby league for the next 12 months, which would keep him out until the earliest 2024 pre-season. The Dragons are optimistic that the 22-year-old will return to the sport in the future, even though he won’t be available for the upcoming season. Ramsey, who was expected to be the Dragons’ starting fullback in 2024, has already undergone several operations and will have to undergo additional treatment over the next year to return to the game. Ulcerative colitis, a disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the bowel and digestive tract, is frequently caused by a malfunction of the immune system. During a pre-season 10-kilometer run, Ramsey first experienced symptoms that resulted in hospitalization, where he stayed for several weeks before being diagnosed with the disease.

Why did Cody Ramsey retire?       

Cody Ramsey, the fullback for St George Illawarra, has been advised by medical professionals that he will be unable to participate in rugby league for a minimum of 12 months. As a result of being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis before Christmas, the Dragons have decided to exclude him from the entire 2024 season. 

After returning to training a few weeks ago, Ramsey’s health and physical appearance have notably improved as he has gained almost 10 kilograms. However, the NRL’s salary cap dispensation options for Ramsey are limited to medical retirement or representative injury dispensation, and the latter does not apply to him. While the Dragons could receive salary cap relief if he retired due to his medical condition, they do not want to give up on his return to rugby league. Medical retirement would require Ramsey to declare that he would not play in the NRL in the future, which he is not willing to do. Ramsey is contracted for 2024 and 2024 after signing an extension in 2021. The Dragons may apply for an exemption if Ramsey does not retire, but his illness is likely to be categorized as an injury. Tyrell Sloan has taken over Ramsey’s expected position as fullback for the start of the season.
