Regrettably, there are individuals who dismiss this fundamental code of ethics and instead resort to deceitful tactics in pursuit of quick monetary gains, forging an alternate reality for themselves. Dr. Makena was apprehended and subsequently faced charges for his fraudulent identity.

Initially establishing himself as a motivational speaker, he swiftly transitioned into the realms of a self-proclaimed “prophet” and “doctor.” Notably, his exorbitant fees were notorious, targeting affluent individuals seeking his dubious services. To add insult to injury, he shamelessly made false promises to his unsuspecting clients, sometimes even persuading them to sell their homes or businesses in order to finance his extravagant schemes.

Tebogo Makena, notorious for his exorbitant consulting fees, made an audacious proclamation of having obtained a Ph.D. in sports science from the University of Pretoria. However, he astonishingly attributed this accolade to a celestial bestowal, asserting his right to free speech as a prophet, and granting him the ability to attend any university of his choosing.

Although Makena purportedly received a Ph.D., diploma, or degree from the University of Pretoria, he adamantly declared that it was bestowed upon him by the heavens above. Rikus Delport, the head of institutional promotion at the University of Pretoria, refuted Makena’s claims, stating unequivocally that he never studied at their esteemed institution.

Unfazed by these revelations, the self-proclaimed “Oracle Under The Sun” exhibited unwavering confidence and dismissed the university’s statements with indifference. Flaunting his significant social media following, he asserted his superiority over attorneys and displayed an unwavering lack of intimidation.

Unfortunately, some individuals forsake common decency in pursuit of quick gains, fabricating an entirely new reality for themselves. Dr. Makena has now been apprehended and charged for assuming this fraudulent identity.

However, this assertion couldn’t be farther from reality. “He never attended the university,” revealed Rikus Delport, the director of institutional advancement at the University of Pretoria. Delport emphasized that it is highly unusual for someone to make such a claim without any evidence to support it.

Makena’s relationship with the law has been far from favorable. In 2017, he and another inmate were apprehended for running an extortion scheme from within Odi Prison. Their modus operandi involved impersonating police detectives, contacting police stations to gather information about car thefts and hijackings, and then demanding money from victims in exchange for the return of their vehicles.

During his time in the facility, Makena allegedly lived a life of luxury by bribing the warden to fulfill his desires. Reports from fellow inmates revealed that he boasted about his lavish clothing, jewelry, and the special treatment he received. However, things have taken a different turn since President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the National Qualifications Framework Amendment Act in October 2019.

The aim of this act is to prevent South Africans from misrepresenting their qualifications on their CVs, including bragging about them on social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. Essentially, making false claims about qualifications can now be considered a serious offense. The amended Act introduces punitive penalties for individuals found guilty of CV fraud, including fines and imprisonment for up to five years.

Moreover, these amendments impose administrative and financial burdens on employers, educational institutions, skills development providers, and quality councils.  Before hiring or registering individuals, they are obligated to verify the authenticity of their qualifications through the national learners’ record database.

If a qualification is found to be unregistered, it must be referred to the South African Qualifications Authority for verification, which incurs a prescribed fee, as stated by MHi Attorneys in a recent statement.

Where is Makena Now?

Surprisingly, allegations surfaced that he had bribed the prison warden to indulge in a life of opulence. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Rikus Delport, the esteemed head of institutional growth at the University of Pretoria, emphatically stated, “He never set foot on our campus.” Delport went on to express his astonishment at such baseless claims made without any corroborating evidence.

According to insiders who confided in Pretoria News, Makena shamelessly boasted about the exquisite garments, extravagant jewelry, and sumptuous meals bestowed upon him. To combat the pervasive trend of South Africans fabricating qualifications on their CVs, President Cyril Ramaphosa took decisive action by signing the National Qualifications Framework Amendment Act in October 2019.

This comprehensive measure encompasses individuals who go so far as to flaunt their deceitful credentials on popular social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn, as aptly noted by MHi Attorneys. It is now regarded as a grave offense to propagate false claims of qualifications. The amended Act carries severe penalties for those found guilty of resume fraud, including hefty fines and a potential prison sentence of up to five years.

Nevertheless, this legislation has inadvertently burdened employers, educational institutions, skills development providers, and quality councils with financial and administrative responsibilities. These entities are now required to diligently verify the authenticity of applicants’ qualifications by cross-referencing the national learners’ record database prior to their appointment or registration.
