Erin underwent emergency exploratory surgery that found her organs were all linked together, joined by a tissue that covered everything, after going “through everything, from doctors thinking it might be something really bad like cancer to saying it was in Erin’s head,” as Ben put it.

They were perplexed by the discovery and referred her to another surgeon. Doctors uncovered the cause of the highly rare disease during a second procedure: a perforated appendix. For years, the organ had burst and healed itself regularly. “When it happened the first time when I was 19, it only partially ruptured.”

“It’s not enough to kill me, but it’s enough to make me sick,” Erin explained in 2018. The organ had healed itself, encasing itself in scar tissue that had spread “like cancer” to encompass her other internal organs. Later, she became cured after a long struggle with the pain she had.

What Happened to Erin Napier? 

Erin Napier started experiencing symptoms of a perforated appendix in 2004, but it took a decade for doctors to diagnose her condition, causing her immense suffering and physical pain. Erin and Ben recounted this challenging time in their book, Make Something Good Today. As per People, Erin began having intermittent fever and abdominal pain when she was 19, but her condition worsened over time.

The scar tissue had caused her organs to adhere to each other. Fortunately, after the removal of her appendix, Erin was able to recover from this rare condition.

On Instagram, the HGTV star posted a picture of herself in her hospital bed with her family friend Rodney, who works in the hospital cafeteria.

“I’m staying in the hospital tonight after a throat procedure, and feeling so cared for by an old friend,” Napier explained. In the touching message, the Home Town presenter—who shares daughters Helen, 4, and Mae, 12 months, with husband and costar Ben—explained her family’s connection to Rodney. Erin has had her fair share of health issues throughout the years.

For years, she endured severe stomach aches until surgery revealed that her appendix had been continuously bursting and mending itself, leaving her organs covered in scar tissue. Another surgery was effective in removing it. Despite her fears that the damage might prevent her from having children, she and Ben have two daughters.
