The Irish Lotto is a popular lottery game in Ireland that began in 1988. It started as a 6/36 format, where players had to choose six numbers out of 36 to win the jackpot. The first draw took place on April 16, 1988, and since then, the draws have been held twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. However, in 1992, there was an attempt to exploit the game when the jackpot reached £1.7 million.
A syndicate tried to buy all possible combinations, but despite the National Lottery’s efforts to prevent it, the syndicate only managed to claim a portion of the jackpot. To prevent such attempts in the future, the National Lottery made changes in 1992, transforming the Irish Lotto into a 6/39 game. This increased the odds of winning the jackpot, making it harder for brute force attacks.
The changes included doubling the starting jackpot, adding a bonus number to the drawings, and introducing new prizes for specific matches. Over the years, the game has evolved, adapting to challenges and competition, but it remains a popular and exciting chance for people in Ireland to try their luck and win prizes while contributing to good causes.
