Tokyo Revengers

“Tokyo Revengers” is a popular Japanese manga series created by Ken Wakui. It was published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine from March 2017 to November 2022 and has been collected into 31 volumes. The story revolves around Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old temporary worker who has a sad life.

He discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, has died in a conflict involving the Tokyo Manji Gang. One day, while returning from work, Takemichi is pushed off a subway platform and magically sent twelve years into the past when he was dating Hinata. Determined to save her, he embarks on a mission to change the past and prevent her death.

The manga’s success led to an anime adaptation produced by Liden Films. The first season aired from April to September 2021, and a second season followed from January to April 2024. A third season started in October 2024. There’s also a live-action film based on the series, with the first part released in July 2021 and the second part in April and June 2024.

By December 2022, the manga had sold over 70 million copies, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever. In 2020, “Tokyo Revengers” received the 44th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category.

Tokyo Revengers Plot

In the first arc of Tokyo Revengers, Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old temp worker, discovers that his ex-girlfriend Hinata and her younger brother Naoto were killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang. He has a strange experience where he time-travels 12 years back to 2005. While in the past, he meets Naoto and learns the date of Hinata’s death. Whenever he shakes hands with Naoto, he returns to the present, where Naoto has become a detective due to the time paradox.

Takemichi is determined to save Hinata. During this time, Takemichi’s friends are involved in dangerous fights with the gang. He becomes close with the gang’s leader, Mikey, but realizes that the gang is a bigger threat to his friends than he initially thought. The story unfolds as Takemichi tries to change the future by preventing certain events and deaths.

In the Valhalla / Bloody Halloween arc, Takemichi discovers that the Tokyo Manji Gang faces internal conflicts, and they have to deal with another gang called Valhalla. There’s a lot of tension, and Takemichi learns about the complex history and relationships within the gangs. He tries to prevent tragic events and deaths but faces challenges along the way.

The Black Dragons / Christmas Showdown arc sees Takemichi returning to the past once again to make changes. He tries to save his friends from a grim fate. There’s a struggle between the Tokyo Manji Gang and the Black Dragons, and Takemichi has to navigate a complicated web of alliances and betrayals. His efforts led to both victories and new challenges.

In the Tenjiku arc, Takemichi discovers that the Tokyo Manji Gang faces a powerful rival gang called Tenjiku.
