Is John Ibrahim Still Alive? Who is He? Where is He now?

Who is John Ibrahim?

John Houssam Ibrahim, born on 25th August 1970, is a notorious former nightclub owner in Kings Cross, with police alleging him to be a major figure in organized crime. The 1995 Wood Royal Commission went as far as to dub him the “lifeblood of the drugs industry of Kings Cross”. Despite this, Ibrahim staunchly denies any involvement, and he has never been convicted for any related crime.

At the tender age of 18, Ibrahim became a part-owner of the Tunnel Cabaret nightclub in Kings Cross. He eventually sold his 20% stake in 2001, and the club was renamed as EP1. Despite police accusations that it was a front for organized drug activities, their legal action to shut it down failed. In 2004, the club was sold to new owners, who renamed it Dragonfly. It later came under Ibrahim’s ownership again, and was renamed The Tunnel before finally being permanently shut down. According to reports, Ibrahim has links to at least 17 nightclubs in Kings Cross.

Where is John Ibrahim now?

At the young age of 26, Mr. Ibrahim had already established himself as one of the most influential personalities in the Sydney nightclub industry. However, nowadays he has moved on to managing real estate investments in the Darlinghurst and inner-city areas. With the advent of lockout laws, it appears that he has distanced himself from the nightclub scene altogether.

In April 2011, an incident involving NRL Roosters players Todd Carney and Anthony Watts prompted the NSW Government to launch an inquiry into whether the Trademark hotel, which was owned by Ibrahim and located in Kings Cross, violated laws on responsible service of alcohol.

The inquiry was initiated after John Hopoate’s assault on a patron outside Trademark in December 2010. Since July 2009, over 529 assaults have occurred either at Trademark, involving Trademark security staff, or near the venue. As a result, Trademark is now subject to reduced trading hours, restricted patron numbers, and increased security measures such as metal detector scans for patrons. It’s a stark reminder of the dangerous environment that Ibrahim has been associated with.

“Last King of the Cross” is a memoir written by John Ibrahim, co-authored with Mark Whittaker, published in 2017. The book chronicles Ibrahim’s life as one of the most notorious and powerful figures in the Sydney underworld and nightclub scene, as well as his eventual exit from the criminal world.

The book details Ibrahim’s early life, growing up in a Lebanese family in Sydney’s south-west, and his eventual move into the nightclub industry, where he quickly became one of the most powerful figures in the scene. Ibrahim also talks candidly about his brushes with the law, including his arrest and imprisonment on drug charges.

In September 2021, John Ibrahim and his girlfriend Sarah Budge were expecting their first child, a baby boy. They were seen enjoying a stroll with their dogs in Bondi during the lockdown in August 2021. Sarah was heavily pregnant and due to give birth in a matter of weeks. The couple lived together in Sydney’s inner west and in Ibrahim’s Dover Heights cliff top mansion in the city’s east.

During his beachside outing, he appeared tanned and toned and had clearly taken a dip in the ocean.

In the past, John has been very candid about the scars he sustained from several near-fatal incidents. In 2017, during an interview with his “good friend” Kyle Sandilands on the radio, the controversial kingpin revealed that being stabbed was worse than being shot. He had been famously attacked at the age of 17.

A recount of his near-death experience was given by Ibrahim, who lifted up his shirt to display his scars, stating that a lot of blood was lost, with one bullet having scraped and the other having lodged between two ribs. He went on to describe how his stomach had poured out into his shirt, and he could actually see it pulsating.

John Ibrahim House

Retired nightclub owner John Ibrahim has proposed a multimillion-dollar redevelopment plan to transform historic Kings Cross terraces into residential apartments. Ibrahim’s company, Cantabri Pty Ltd, aims to partially demolish and restore the properties on Bayswater Road in Potts Point, which formerly housed nightclubs and bars. The proposed $19.7 million plan includes 22 apartments, a bar, restaurant, and retail space.

The site previously hosted Bayswater Brasserie and Crane Bar, owned by Ibrahim’s girlfriend Sarah Budge. The development also includes the former Lincoln nightclub, now a pole dancing venue. The proposal is on public exhibition until April 5 and faces opposition from Potts Point and Kings Cross Heritage Society President Andrew Woodhouse, who has called the building plans “dollar-driven” and misconceived, urging the council to demand amendments.

The development application notes that some terraces are heritage-listed, and the site sits within the Potts Point Heritage Conservation Area.
