Jonathan Gannon, who served as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in the last two seasons, has been hired as the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the Eagles losing Super Bowl LVII just two days ago, Gannon’s success as a coordinator led to other NFL teams interviewing him as an up-and-coming coach.

It’s worth noting that although Jonathan Gannon’s last name may sound familiar because of former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon, there is actually no relation between the two. Despite both having connections to the NFL, they are not related in any way in their respective family trees.

Rich Gannon, who played 18 seasons in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings, Washington, and the Kansas City Chiefs before ending his career with the Oakland Raiders, went on to work as a full-time analyst for CBS from 2005 until 2021, and now does occasional work for the network.

Shortly before Super Bowl LVII, Gannon had expressed his intention to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles despite interviewing for various positions around the league. However, he has apparently changed his mind and decided to pursue the head coaching position with the young Arizona Cardinals team.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Gannon attended Saint Ignatius High School, where he was a successful three-sport athlete. He won a state championship in basketball as a point guard, became a district champion as a hurdler in track, and was a standout wide receiver and defensive back.

Gannon then went on to play at the University of Louisville until he sustained a career-ending injury. However, he remained with the program and served as a volunteer assistant during the 2003-2005 seasons. Later, he became a graduate assistant and helped Louisville win the 2006 Orange Bowl.

Richard Joseph Gannon, born on December 20, 1965, is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 18 seasons. He later worked as a sports commentator for CBS Sports for 16 years.

Gannon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and played college football at the University of Delaware, where he played as a quarterback in coach Tubby Raymond’s Wing-T offense. He was named the Yankee Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a senior and recorded at least 2,000 offensive yards for three consecutive seasons.

In the 1987 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Gannon in the fourth round, intending to convert him to a running back. However, he was soon traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where he played until 1992. Gannon initially started as a backup for Wade Wilson, but he began starting games in 1990 when Wilson was injured. He started many games in 1991, and in 1992, he officially became the starting quarterback for the Vikings. Gannon led the team to an 11-5 season and the playoffs after two consecutive losing seasons.
