Liv’s near-fatal plane journey is motivated by her desire to track down her estranged mother, Lucia, in Inuvik, Canada. Liv has just discovered she is pregnant with colleague Danny’s baby, and she wants to find the mother who walked out on her when she was a child. Following her father Tomás’ death, Liv finds a collection of postcards from Lucia with updates on her location, which Tomás had kept from her.

In the second-to-last episode, an exhausted Liv hallucinates a reunion with her mother, where she gets answers and closure over what happened. In the series finale, she appears to finally be saved by two men who pull her out of a river. After that, there are flash-forwards of Liv’s life ahead, including her baby’s birth and a happy future with Danny. However, it is hard to tell what is real and what is imagined in Liv’s exhausted state.
