Michael Jai White, who has studied nine different martial arts styles including Shōtōkan, Goju-Ryu, Taekwondo, Kobudō, Tang Soo Do, Wushu, Jiu Jitsu, Kyokushin, and Boxing, is alive and well.

He began his martial arts training at the age of four in Jiu Jitsu and later incorporated aspects from various other martial arts forms into his own style, which is primarily focused on Kyokushin Karate. In addition to his martial arts background, White also has a background in education and previously worked as a special education teacher for students with behavioral problems.

Michael Jai White was born on November 10, 1967. He holds the distinction of being the first African American to portray a major comic book superhero in a major motion picture, having played the lead role of Al Simmons in the 1997 film Spawn. White has also appeared in a number of Tyler Perry films, portraying the character of Marcus Williams in Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?, and starring in Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, a comedy-drama television series aired on TBS/OWN. In addition, he has played the characters of Jax Briggs in Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Seth in Universal Soldier: The Return. White’s portrayal of boxer Mike Tyson in the 1995 HBO television film Tyson was also well-received. He has also played the title role in the blaxploitation parody film Black Dynamite, as well as in the animated series of the same name. 

From 2005 to 2011, White was married to Courtenay Chatman, and they share a daughter named Morgan, while White has two sons as well. White announced his engagement to actress Gillian Iliana Waters in February 2014 and in July 2015, they got married in Thailand. In April 2015, White wrote an open letter via Facebook titled “Apologies to My Ex’s”, crediting Waters for helping him become the “very best version” of himself. The couple acted together in the 2021 martial arts thriller Take Back, with Gillian White playing the female lead.

White was awarded the Fists of Legends Decade Award at the Urban Action Showcase & Expo at HBO in 2014. Additionally, on November 8, 2019, at the 2019 Urban Action Showcase & Expo at AMC 25 in NYC, he was bestowed with the “Mantle of The Black Dragon” from Ron van Clief, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, and Taimak.
