Ram Setu is an Indian Hindi-language action-adventure film released in 2022 and directed by Abhishek Sharma. The movie features a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushrratt Bharuccha, and Satya Dev. The story follows an archaeologist who embarks on an investigation into the nature of Rama Setu, also known as Adam’s Bridge.
The film’s journey began in November 2020 when it was officially announced, and principal photography commenced in Mumbai on March 30, 2021. However, the production faced numerous setbacks and delays due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Filming eventually resumed in October 2021 and concluded in January 2022, taking place in various locations such as Ooty, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, the Maldives, and Mumbai.
Ram Setu had its theatrical release on October 25, 2022, coinciding with the Diwali festivities in India. Upon release, the film received predominantly negative reviews from critics. Despite the star power and extensive marketing, it failed to resonate with the audience, resulting in disappointing box office performance.
The film grossed ₹93 crore worldwide, falling short of its estimated budget of ₹150 crore. Ram Setu faced challenges during its production due to the pandemic and was met with a lukewarm reception from both critics and audiences. Despite the negative reviews, it managed to generate some revenue but couldn’t fully recover its production costs.
The film Ram Setu is partially based on real events, although it incorporates elements of fiction. While there is no known or real character named Aaryan Kulshreshtra in relation to the events portrayed in the film, many of the incidents depicted are based on real-life occurrences.
The central theme of the movie revolves around the concept of a bridge called Ram Setu, which is a subject of famous mythological and religious theories concerning the connection between India and Sri Lanka. In this aspect, the film incorporates elements from Hindu mythology and legends surrounding the Ramayana epic.
However, it’s important to note that the film also takes creative liberties and introduces fictional elements to enhance the storytelling. The character of Aaryan Kulshreshtra, as mentioned earlier, is not based on any known real person but serves as a fictional representation within the narrative. Ram Setu is a blend of real and fictional elements, drawing inspiration from real-life events and religious beliefs, while also incorporating creative storytelling to entertain the audience.
The plot of the film revolves around Dr. Aryan Kulshreshtra, an archaeologist working for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Aryan is known for his strong belief in scientific facts and his skepticism towards religious beliefs. He has already made significant discoveries, such as uncovering the treasure of Raja Dahir and a reclining Buddha statue near the Buddhas of Bamyan in Afghanistan, following their destruction by the Taliban.
In 2007, the government plans to demolish Rama Setu, a bridge, in order to construct a canal. Aryan is asked to draft a report for the Supreme Court of India, stating that the bridge is a natural formation. Initially hesitant, he eventually submits a report that challenges the existence of Lord Rama and dismisses the Ramayana as a work of fiction. This leads to public outrage and hostility towards Aryan, with his own son facing bullying in school due to the controversy.
Meanwhile, Aryan receives an offer from a wealthy businessman named Indrakant, who wants the Rama Setu demolished for his own interests. Reluctant at first, Aryan decides to accept the offer after witnessing the impact of the controversy on his son. He joins an archaeological expedition with project manager Bali and fellow scientists Dr. Sandra Rebello and Dr. Gabrielle.
During their research, they discover that Rama Setu is much older than Lord Rama himself, raising the possibility that it could have been built by him. Aryan aims to prove the bridge’s man-made origin and its connection to Lord Rama. However, Indrakant only wants evidence that the bridge predates Lord Rama, so he can proceed with the demolition and save costs. Indrakant plans to eliminate Aryan and his team.
During a mission, their submarine malfunctions, and they find themselves in a life-threatening situation with low oxygen levels. They are saved by a man named Anjaneyan Pushpakumaran ‘AP,’ who takes them to a remote island in Sri Lanka. AP agrees to help them in their cause but demands monetary compensation. While on their journey, they face opposition from Bali, who is determined to retrieve a floating stone that holds crucial evidence.
Amidst the chase, Dr. Gabrielle is shot and the stone goes missing. Undeterred, Aryan, Sandra, and AP continue their quest to prove the existence of Lord Rama and the man-made origin of Rama Setu. They conduct research across Sri Lanka, uncovering archaeological evidence that supports the story of the Ramayana.
With the help of various individuals, Aryan manages to halt the construction of the canal and presents the evidence in court, proving the man-made nature of Rama Setu and the potential existence of Lord Rama. Additionally, Aryan realizes that AP is not an ordinary human but Lord Hanuman himself.
The film follows Dr. Aryan Kulshreshtra’s journey to investigate Rama Setu, challenge established beliefs, face public hostility, and ultimately uncover archaeological evidence that supports the existence of Lord Rama and the man-made origin of the bridge.
In the climactic ending scene, Dr. Aryan Kulshrestha, determined to save Ram Setu from demolition, makes a bold move by storming into the Supreme Court of India. The court is on the verge of delivering its verdict on the fate of Ram Setu, whether it should be preserved or destroyed to make way for a canal. Aryan, armed with compelling evidence and convinced of the bridge’s historical significance, presents his case before the justices.
He passionately argues that the bridge is a remarkable man-made structure and an essential part of India’s cultural and religious heritage. Drawing upon the extensive research conducted by his team, Aryan meticulously lays out the archaeological findings, historical references, and connections to the Ramayana epic. He highlights the age of the bridge, its intricate design, and the presence of key locations mentioned in the ancient text.
As Aryan presents his conclusive evidence, the courtroom is filled with anticipation and tension. The justices carefully listen to his arguments, evaluating the significance and impact of his findings. The fate of Ram Setu hangs in the balance, and the decision of the Supreme Court carries immense weight. After a brief period of contemplation, the justices come to a groundbreaking conclusion. They agree with Dr. Kulshrestha’s conclusions and acknowledge the importance of the evidence presented.
In a historic ruling, the Supreme Court puts a stay order on any further work that would damage or demolish Ram Setu. The verdict brings a sense of relief and triumph to Aryan, his team, and the millions of people who revere Ram Setu as a sacred monument.
The preservation of the bridge represents not only a victory for historical accuracy and cultural heritage but also serves as a testament to the power of scientific exploration and the pursuit of truth. The film concludes on a note of celebration, as Aryan’s efforts to save Ram Setu are validated and honored by the highest judicial authority in India. The ending leaves a lasting impression of the significance of preserving and respecting our rich cultural heritage for future generations to come.
