Van Damme was raised in Brussels, Belgium, and started training in Shotokan karate at the age of ten. He further honed his fighting skills in both Shotokan karate and kickboxing. He was part of the Belgium Karate Team that won the European Karate Championship on December 26, 1979.

With aspirations of becoming an actor, he moved to the United States in 1982, where he worked on several films and took on odd jobs until he landed his breakthrough role as the lead in the martial arts movie Bloodsport (1988).
