He played a prominent role in the commercial success of gangsta rap during the 1990s, with the record label’s first two album releases, The Chronic by Dr. Dre in 1992 and Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg in 1993.

Knight’s parents were Maxine and Marion Knight Sr., and his childhood nickname “Sugar Bear” gave rise to his moniker “Suge.” He attended Lynwood High School in Lynwood, where he excelled in football and track and graduated in 1983. At some point, Knight became associated with the Mob Piru Bloods, which is a faction of the Bloods gang alliance.
