Jamell Maurice Demons, known by his stage name YNW Melly, is a popular American rapper and singer, famous for his songs “Murder on My Mind,” “Mixed Personalities,” “Suicidal,” and “223’s.” He gained further fame after being charged with the double-murder of two fellow rappers in the “YNW” collective. In November 2019, he released his debut album, Melly vs. Melvin, which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart.
However, in February 2019, he was arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder, for which he may face life imprisonment without parole or even the death penalty if convicted. He is also a suspect in the 2017 murder of a sheriff’s deputy in Gifford. In March 2019, Demons pleaded not guilty to the double-murder charges and is presently awaiting trial.
Demons was born on May 1, 1999, in Gifford, Florida, and was raised by his single mother, Jamie Demons-King, who was only 14 years old when she gave birth to him in ninth grade. His father’s identity is unknown to him, although another rapper, Donte “Tha Gift” Taylor, claims to be his father. Demons-King struggled to provide for her family and was unable to afford basic necessities such as housing. Demons’ younger brother, YNW BSlime, is also a rapper. Demons joined the Bloods gang at a young age and began posting his music on SoundCloud when he was 15. In 2015, Demons was arrested for shooting at a group of students near Vero Beach High School, for which he served several months in prison after being convicted of aggravated battery, discharging a firearm in public, and two counts of aggravated assault.

Although YNW Melly has made statements on social media suggesting that he will be released from jail soon, as of the latest update in May 2022, he is still in custody. His mother and brother have also stated that they believe he will be released soon if a jury is selected quickly. Nonetheless, it is yet to be seen what the outcome of his trial will be. According to various source He filed a motion to be released from prison early on health grounds, citing 6ix9ine’s release from prison due to asthma and bronchitis as a precedent. However, on April 14th, his request was denied.
Despite being incarcerated in Florida, Melly battled a COVID-19 case while behind bars. However, unlike other prisoners who were released from the facility due to COVID concerns during the pandemic, he remained in custody.
Currently, the process of selecting a jury for his trial is ongoing. Initially scheduled to begin on April 19, 2022, the jury selection process has been delayed, as per the Sun-Sentinel report. Despite the prolonged legal process, Melly maintains his innocence and hopes to be released from jail by the end of 2024.
