Judd Nelson was born in Portland, Maine to parents Merle (née Royte) and Leonard Nelson. His mother was a former member of the Maine House of Representatives and worked as a court mediator, while his father was a corporate lawyer and the first Jewish president of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Nelson has two sisters, Eve and Julie.
