Naruto is a popular Japanese manga series created by Masashi Kishimoto. The story revolves around Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who aspires to gain recognition from his peers and become the Hokage, the leader of his village. The manga is divided into two parts, with the first focusing on Naruto’s pre-teen years and the second on his teenage life.
The series originated from two one-shot manga by Kishimoto: “Karakuri” in 1995, which earned him an honorable mention in Shueisha’s Hop Step Award, and “Naruto” in 1997. Serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from 1999 to 2014, Naruto spanned 72 tankōbon volumes, collecting its chapters.
The manga’s success led to the creation of an anime television series produced by Pierrot and Aniplex. The anime aired 220 episodes from 2002 to 2007, with an English dubbed version appearing on Cartoon Network and YTV from 2005 to 2009. A sequel to the original series called Naruto: Shippuden premiered in 2007, concluding in 2017 after 500 episodes.
The English dub of Naruto: Shippuden aired on Disney XD from 2009 to 2011, and then moved to Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block in 2014. The English dub is still ongoing on Adult Swim. Additionally, Viz Media streamed the anime series on their Neon Alley streaming service from 2012 to 2016. The franchise also includes eleven movies and twelve original video animations (OVAs), along with various merchandise such as light novels, video games, and trading cards.
