Reflecting on this devastating loss, Don Wood, Peyton’s former coach, shared his admiration for the young man’s potential. “It’s truly a life cut short, which makes it all the more difficult to come to terms with. Peyton possessed remarkable qualities that promised a bright future. From what I observed of his character, he was destined for significant accomplishments,” Wood stated.

Peyton was born on December 12, 2004, in Oklahoma City, OK, to his devoted parents Eric and Jamie (Gross) Sims. A proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Peyton’s journey began in Oklahoma City but touched the lives of many far and wide.
Peyton’s academic and personal journey was marked by his unwavering dedication and passion. He was a shining star at Mustang Schools, where he pursued his education with zeal. As a senior, Peyton was on the brink of his graduation in May of 2024. His commitment extended beyond the classroom walls, as he showcased his athletic prowess as a valuable member of the Mustang baseball team for two years.
Yet, it was the world of volleyball that truly captured his heart. Peyton’s passion for volleyball led him to join the OKC Heat club team, and he also played an instrumental role as the manager of the Mustang High School varsity volleyball team.
Academically, Peyton was a beacon of excellence. His outstanding achievements earned him a place in the National Honor Society and the esteemed title of Valedictorian. Peyton’s academic pursuits were set to continue at the renowned Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, where he aimed to carry on the legacy of his family as a 4th generation “Cowboy.” He was already taking classes at OSU-OKC, displaying his commitment to learning and growth.
Beyond his academic and athletic accomplishments, Peyton’s diverse interests and hobbies painted a picture of a vibrant young man. He channeled his creative energy into upgrading and modifying his car, an endeavor that brought him great joy.
Physical fitness was another important aspect of his life, as he frequented his favorite gym to stay active and healthy. In quieter moments, Peyton found solace in the world of video games and was an avid fan of all sports. He also took on roles at Chick Fil A and Hideaway Pizza, where his dedication and work ethic shone brightly.
However, above all else, Peyton cherished the bonds of family and friendship. His sister Paige held a special place in his heart, and spending time with her brought him immense happiness. Peyton’s circle of close friends was a testament to his genuine and kind nature. His warm smile and infectious laughter could light up any room he entered.
Peyton leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. He is survived by his loving parents, Eric and Jamie, and his adoring sister, Paige. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his grandparents, Wayne and Carolyn Sims, Lea Ann Sims, John and Mary Gross, as well as his Aunts and Uncles; Wes & Sarah Sims, Tony & Rebekah McBride. His cousins, Charlotte and Ellery Sims, and Ben McBride, also hold dear memories of their time together.
In honor of Peyton’s life and his passion for volleyball, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Mustang High School Volleyball Booster Club in lieu of flowers. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Peyton’s life at 10 AM on Friday, April 21st, at the Life Church in Mustang, Oklahoma. This will be a time for friends, family, and loved ones to come together, sharing stories and celebrating the remarkable young man whose light touched so many lives.

The incident occurred on a Monday afternoon when a 2021 Kia Forte, driven by Sims, collided head-on with a bridge support while traveling from the northbound Kilpatrick Turnpike onto the eastbound Interstate 40. The collision took place at approximately 4:50 p.m. Peyton Sims was pronounced dead upon arrival at the OU Medical Centre, as confirmed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
