The movie follows Dean Corso starring Johnny Depp, a rare book dealer who was hired by Boris Balkan, a wealthy collector, to corroborate the original copy of a rare book called “The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows,” which is believed to be able to convoke the devil. Boris believes that only one of the three surviving copies of the book is genuine, and he wants Corso to inspect the remaining books to determine which one is authentic.
During his search, Corso meets a mysterious woman who he suspects is following him. As Corso investigates the other two copies of the books, he encounters many obstacles, including a seductive woman who tries to steal the book, a murdered bookseller, and a Satanic cult that uses the book for a ritual.
In the end, Corso discovers that the book contains nine engravings, and only six are signed by the author while the other three are signed by Lucifer. Corso then realizes that the inscription signed by Lucifer is the key to the book’s authenticity, and he uncovers a ploy that involves Balkan and the mysterious woman who has been following him.
