Colm Bairéad’s 2022 Irish drama film, “The Quiet Girl,” is primarily in Irish language and portrays a coming-of-age story. The movie is set in 1981 and centres around a reticent nine-year-old girl who discovers the warmth of a caring family for the first time during a summer spent on a farm with distant relatives in Rinn Gaeltacht, County Waterford. The film’s excellence was recognized with a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
Over the summer, Cáit grows more comfortable with herself and forms a close relationship with her temporary guardians, Seán and Eibhlín. Though Seán is initially emotionally distant due to the trauma of losing his son, he gradually warms up to Cáit and learns to confront his grief. As the summer comes to an end, Cáit falls ill after falling into a well and is bedridden for a few days. The Kinsellas bring her back home, where her parents show little interest in her. Cáit’s father criticises and berates her for her cold, which upsets Seán and Eibhlín. They leave, heartbroken to leave Cáit in a neglected home. As they’re leaving, Cáit sprints after them and they share a loving embrace. When Cáit’s father approaches, she warns Seán with a soft “daddy,” but then embraces her actual father more fondly. The film then ends.
In Claire Keegan’s award-winning 2015 short story Foster, the nameless narrator is a little girl living in rural Ireland who is sent to live with relatives she’s never met while her mother has another baby. Despite expecting the worst, the childless couple treats her with kindness and care, and she begins to experience the ease and comfort that she’s never known before. The story is told from the child’s point of view, and Keegan’s writing is rooted in the details that the child absorbs from her observations of the world around her.
“The Quiet Girl,” directed by Colm Bairéad and adapted from Keegan’s story, maintains this child’s point of view for the most part, focusing on the world as seen through the eyes of the girl. Bairéad has made some changes to the source material, including a prologue that introduces the girl’s life at home and some dialogue in English peppered in with the Irish dialogue. This Irish-language film, titled “An Cailín Ciúin” in Irish, has been nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards, making it the first Irish-language film to receive this honor.
