Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They are parasites that require human hosts to provide them with food. Most bed bug bites occur while individuals are asleep. These pests are flat, brown or reddish-brown insects with six legs. Adult bed bugs are typically the size of an apple seed, around 5-7 mm. Young bed bugs are white-to-yellow or translucent if they have not fed. Bed bug eggs are very small, about the size of a pinhead, and are pearly white. A female bed bug can lay 200 to 500 eggs during its lifetime, leading to a rapid infestation even with just a few bed bugs present in a home.
Bed bugs can be found in various locations, ranging from luxurious hotels to homes, apartments, dormitories, and shelters. They are also present in buses, trains, and ships. These pests are prevalent worldwide and typically reside within eight feet of where individuals sleep. Bed bugs are most active at night and hide in and around beds, including along mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and cushions of bedroom chairs or couches. They can also be found in cracks, crevices, folds of objects, corners of walls, loose wallpaper edges, and around electrical outlets.
Bed bug bites can affect anyone, and infestations can occur regardless of cleanliness levels. Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers and can be transported into homes through luggage, clothing, bedding, used mattresses, and furniture. The bites may result in itchy red bumps, often appearing in clusters or a zigzag pattern on exposed skin areas. While some individuals may not react to bed bug bites, others may experience allergic reactions, leading to hives, blisters, or intense itching.
Aside from bed bug bites, other signs of an infestation include a sweet, musty odor, reddish or rust-colored stains on bedding, exoskeletons shed by bed bugs, live bugs in bedsheets and mattresses, and the presence of bed bug eggs. It’s crucial to inspect mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and other potential hiding spots for these pests to confirm an infestation.
Bed bug bites can vary in appearance, with some individuals developing raised red bumps or welts, while others may experience severe itching. It’s essential to avoid scratching the bites to prevent skin damage and potential infections. Treatment options include cleaning the bites with soap and water, applying creams or lotions with hydrocortisone, calamine lotion, or baking soda paste, and using cool compresses to alleviate itching. In severe cases, medical attention may be necessary to address allergic reactions or skin infections.
To prevent bed bug bites while sleeping, individuals can wear pajamas with long sleeves and pants, vacuum infested areas, use bed bug interceptors, cover mattresses and box springs with protective encasements, and regularly wash bedding in hot water. Seeking professional help from exterminators is often necessary to eliminate bed bug infestations completely.
