Twist of Fate Sanctuary was an animal sanctuary run by Ashley DiFelice in Salem County. However, the sanctuary has been closed following allegations of severe animal neglect in July 2022. The sanctuary was home to various animals, including horses, pigs, goats, and chickens.
In July 2022, allegations emerged of severe animal neglect at Twist of Fate Sanctuary, which was run by Ashley DiFelice in Salem County. Other sanctuary owners who had heard rumors of the neglect confronted DiFelice and visited the now-closed sanctuary on July 24th, where they discovered the remains of deceased animals and emaciated animals without access to clean drinking water. Photographs of the neglected animals and the remains of deceased animals were shared in a Change petition. DiFelice was subsequently charged with animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty. The Change petition alleges that she is still awaiting trial and sentencing.
After the neglect at Twist of Fate Sanctuary was discovered, the surviving animals were re-homed by other sanctuary owners who had confronted Ashley DiFelice. Caitlin Cimini of Rancho Relaxo took in five horses, named Tommy, Moose, Mintaka, Rigel, and Betelgeuse, and they became part of her sanctuary. However, Cimini is still trying to find placements for the last four animals in need. The authorities were notified by Cimini and her colleagues once everything was discovered, and the trauma caused by the case has been immeasurable for everyone involved.
On April 12, 2024, The Dodo issued a statement in response to the revelations about Twist of Fate. The animal welfare organization expressed shock and sadness about the allegations against the sanctuary and announced that they had removed all videos featuring them. The Dodo also contacted their partners at Scholastic and mutually agreed to stop selling the book about Pumpkin, a mini pony that died while under Twist of Fate’s care. The Dodo emphasized that animal welfare is at the core of their mission, a message they conveyed to their 10 million followers via their official Instagram Stories.
