A woman named Angel Bumpass was tied to Franklin Bonner’s death in 2019 and then tried alongside a co-defendant, Mallory Vaughn. At the time of trial, Angel Bumpass was 24, Vaughn was 37 and she was convicted but he was found not guilty on both counts. Angel was later sentenced to life in jail. The condemned woman, and her legions of defenders online, have always maintained she was wrongfully convicted. Know here What Happened To Angel Bumpass.
The Tennessee woman convicted on felony murder and robbery charges won a new trial after years of demanding that she was framed and had no knowledge of the crime.
Creative director for series producer Brinkworth TV Xander Brinkworth said, “We hope that people watch this episode and understand a little bit of how Angel’s criminal appeal worked. So much of what we see and hear around crimes and convictions is dramatized or delivered for effect, so it is essential to show this is actually how appeals work and what they mean.”
Angel was 24 when she was discovered guilty by a jury of first-degree felony murder in Franklin Bonner’s death.
Angel was just 13 at the time of Franklin’s death. Her grandfather, Balis Smith, testified that as a girl Angel loved arts and crafts and would also work on some tasks that included duct tape in his garage. He also said he was a handyman who had been to Franklin’s house — and might have brought duct tape there with her fingerprints on it.
Angel was 3 years into a life sentence at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, previously known as the Tennessee Prison for Women when Angel was granted a new trial by former Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tom Greenholtz. The woman was released on bond in November.
Brinkworth revealed the follow-up episode was created to satisfy the viewers’ need to know more about the case.
Not much is known about Angel Bumpass’s parents. The Justice for Angel Bumpass site strives for support for a retrial motion and financial support for her family, who are said to be overwhelmed by legal fees, says wikibious.
The Bumpass case was featured in episode 75 of the “Women and Crime” podcast. A status hearing for Angel is set before Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Amanda Dunn on 29th March.
