In 2011, a child from Ludington, Michigan, disappeared and was presumed dead at the young age of four and a half months. Despite efforts, her body was never recovered. Nonetheless, her father was found guilty and sentenced to prison five years later for his involvement in her disappearance.
Ariel Courtland and Sean Phillips had a daughter together before Courtland became pregnant with Katherine. However, the birth of their second child changed their relationship. According to MLive, Phillips urged Courtland to have an abortion, and after Katherine’s birth, he pressured her to put the baby up for adoption. Phillips refused to acknowledge paternity, became angry when Courtland announced the birth, and didn’t want to be listed on the baby’s insurance application.
Courtland started considering adoption, but on June 29, 2011, Phillips abducted Katherine while they were driving to a DNA test appointment to confirm paternity. Courtland briefly left the car to grab a stroller, and when she returned, Phillips and the baby were gone, along with her phone. Courtland tried to contact Phillips, but he didn’t answer. Eventually, the police found Phillips, but he didn’t have the baby with him.
True Crime Daily reported that in December 2016, Sean Phillips was convicted of second-degree murder and was sentenced to spend 19 to 45 years in prison, although it remains disputed whether the crime was premeditated. The location of the child’s body, who has still not been found, remains a mystery, and many people hope that Phillips will eventually provide information that will lead to its discovery.
In July 2015, CBS Detroit reported that police believed they had found Baby Kate’s body in a river in Massachusetts, but it was later confirmed that the body was not related to the missing child. In 2012, according to ABC, Courtland expressed a desire to marry Phillips, despite his conviction. However, it’s unclear if they eventually got married or not.
Ariel Courtland and Sean Phillips had a child together prior to Courtland’s pregnancy with Katherine. However, the birth of their second child caused significant turmoil in their relationship. According to MLive, Phillips attempted to persuade Courtland to have an abortion and urged her to put Katherine up for adoption after she was born. He refused to acknowledge paternity and became irate when Courtland announced Katherine’s birth. He also did not want his name listed on Katherine’s insurance application.
After considering adoption, Courtland’s world was turned upside down on June 29, 2011, when Phillips abducted Katherine during a car ride to a DNA test appointment. Courtland briefly stepped out of the car to grab a stroller, and upon her return, she found that Phillips had taken the car, the baby, and her phone. Despite contacting him from a friend’s phone, Phillips did not respond, and the police eventually found him without the baby.
During his trial, Phillips wrote a letter to Courtland detailing what had happened to Katherine. Jurors interpreted the letter in different ways, with some believing that Phillips threw the baby in a fit of rage and others believing it was an accident. Nevertheless, Katherine’s body was never found.
