Who was Marisol Malaret? 

Born on October 13, 1949, Marisol Malaret Contreras was a renowned Puerto Rican model, beauty queen, and television host. Despite facing adversity at a young age due to the death of her father and her mother’s chronic illness, Malaret worked hard and even held a job as an executive secretary at the Puerto Rico Telephone Company. It was Puerto Rican make-up artist Carmen Andino who convinced Malaret to enter the Miss Puerto Rico pageant, which was then owned by Anna Santisteban, a prominent Puerto Rican modeling expert and entrepreneur. With her strong work ethic and natural beauty, Malaret quickly became a crowd favorite in the local competition and went on to win the Miss Universe title in 1970, becoming the first woman from the Caribbean and Puerto Rico to achieve this feat. Malaret had six siblings, one brother, and five half-siblings from her parents, Lydia Contreras and José Antonio Malaret. She was married three times, to former male model Butch James, musician Corky Stroman (with whom she had a child named Sasha), and Cuban-born engineer Frank Cué.

Her husband, engineer Frank Cué, and daughter, screenwriter Sasha Stroman Malaret, were by her side during her final moments. Malaret was encouraged by her colleagues to compete in the Miss Puerto Rico beauty pageant, which she won, and went on to compete in Miss Universe representing the Society of Crippled Children and Adults of the Country. Despite losing all her trousseau a few days before the contest, model Ivonne Coll lent her costumes, allowing Malaret to compete and become the first Puerto Rican Miss Universe in 1970 at the age of 20.
