The Beach Boys are still active, with the exception of Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson who have passed away. Dennis Wilson was a key member of the band and the only one who actually surfed. He came up with the idea to base the band’s image on the surfing lifestyle of their hometown, Hawthorne. Unfortunately, Dennis struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life, and he died tragically at the age of 39 from drowning after a day of heavy drinking in Marina Del Ray.

Carl Wilson, the youngest of the Wilson brothers, passed away in 1998 at the age of 51 from lung cancer. Despite being a heavy smoker since his teens, Carl continued to perform and record music even after his diagnosis. He underwent chemotherapy but unfortunately succumbed to the disease. Throughout his illness, he remained passionate about music and continued to perform, even if it meant using an oxygen tank. Despite the loss of these two talented musicians, the Beach Boys continue to be an important part of American music history, with their signature harmonies and iconic surf rock sound still influencing musicians today.

How many Beach Boys are Alive?

The “official” Beach Boys lineup consists of the surviving original members, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, as well as later members Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. These four members are considered the core of the band’s legacy, responsible for many of their most beloved hits and signature sounds. However, despite being part of the “official” lineup, not all members participate in the current touring lineup. At present, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston are the only members actively touring under the Beach Boys’ name. Brian Wilson and Al Jardine occasionally join them for select performances, but they do not participate in all of the shows. The Beach Boys Members

Brian Wilson, also joining in 1961, did not tour with the band during specific periods from 1964 to 1976, 1990 to 2011, and has been absent from touring since 2012. He plays bass, keyboards, and vocals. Bruce Johnston became a member in 1965, left in 1978, and rejoined the band in 1978, continuing to perform with them. He plays the keyboard, bass, and vocals.

Al Jardine first joined in 1961, left in 1962, returned in 1963, and has remained a member since. He did not tour with the band from 1999 to 2011 and has not been on tour since 2012. He plays bass, guitar, and vocals. In addition, the band has had several former members, including David Marks, who played guitars and vocals and was with the band during the periods of 1962-1963, 1997-1999, and 2011-2012. Ricky Fataar contributed his skills on pedal steel guitar, flute, percussion, drums, guitar, and vocals during his time with the band from 1972 to 1974. Blondie Chaplin played bass, guitar, and vocals during his brief stint with the group from 1972 to 1973. Finally, Carl Wilson played keyboard, guitar, and vocals as a member from 1961 to 1998 before his passing, while Dennis Wilson played keyboard, percussion, drums, and vocals as a member from 1961 to 1983 before his untimely death.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys were formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961 and consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Their music was characterized by vocal harmonies and adolescent-themed lyrics celebrating southern California’s youth culture. They had a string of top-ten hits and were known as one of the most influential acts of the rock era. After the deaths of Dennis and Carl, the band granted legal rights to tour under the group’s name to Mike Love. As of 2022, Brian and Jardine do not perform with Love’s edition of the Beach Boys but remain official members of the band. The Beach Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide and had 37 songs reach the US Top 40. They were ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest artists of all time and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
