Following the brutal murder of their mother, Wilma McCann, the four children faced a harrowing and challenging journey. Richard and Sonia, the eldest at ages five and seven, discovered their mother’s lifeless body while searching for her in the early morning fog. Donna and Angela, aged three and four, joined their siblings in a photograph published in the newspaper.
Subsequently, all four children were placed in a children’s home before being taken in by their estranged and abusive father. Tragedy struck again when Sonia, battling alcohol addiction, took her own life at the age of 39 in 2007. This heartbreaking loss compounded the family’s pain.
Richard, the eldest child, struggled with the aftermath of his mother’s murder, experiencing personal challenges such as drug use and incarceration. Nevertheless, he eventually transformed his life, becoming a successful motivational speaker and a devoted father. He also forgave Peter Sutcliffe, finding inspiration in the teachings of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Wilma McCann was a tragic victim and the first known murder victim of the infamous serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, who later became known as the Yorkshire Ripper. She was a mother of four children and was just 28 years old at the time of her murder. On October 30, 1975, in Leeds, Wilma McCann was brutally attacked and killed by Peter Sutcliffe.
He used a hammer to strike her and then proceeded to stab her 15 times in her chest, neck, and abdomen. This horrifying event marked the beginning of a series of murders committed by Sutcliffe. Wilma’s murder was followed by the deaths of 12 more women and the attempted murder of seven others, making the Yorkshire Ripper case one of the most notorious and chilling serial killer investigations in British history.
