Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, known as the “king of cocaine,” was a Colombian drug lord, narcoterrorist, and politician who founded and led the infamous Medellín Cartel. Born on 1 December 1949 in Rionegro, Colombia, Escobar grew up in poverty in Medellín. Despite his humble beginnings, he went on to become one of the wealthiest criminals in history, amassing an estimated net worth of US$30 billion by the time of his death in 1993.
Escobar’s criminal career began with petty crimes like stealing tombstones and cars. He quickly escalated to violent crime, kidnapping individuals for ransom. In 1976, he founded the Medellín Cartel, which dominated the cocaine trade into the United States. Escobar’s rise to prominence was fueled by his ruthless tactics, including bribery, intimidation, and violence.
As the demand for cocaine in the United States soared, Escobar expanded his smuggling operations and distribution networks. He amassed immense wealth, allowing him to invest in philanthropic endeavors in Colombia. Despite his criminal activities, Escobar was known for his charitable work, earning him the moniker “Robin Hood Paisa.”
In 1991, Escobar surrendered to Colombian authorities and was confined to his luxurious private prison, La Catedral. However, he escaped in 1992 and evaded capture until his death on 2 December 1993. Colombian special forces located and killed Escobar in a shootout in Medellín, ending a 16-month search effort.
Following Escobar’s death, the Medellín Cartel fragmented, and the Cali Cartel rose to power. Despite his notorious reputation, Escobar was mourned by many in Colombia, with over 25,000 people attending his funeral. His family, including his widow Maria Henao and son Sebastián Marroquín, faced challenges and legal issues in the aftermath of his demise.
After Escobar’s death, his estate, Hacienda Nápoles, was transformed into a theme park. His brother, Roberto Escobar, founded Escobar Inc in 2014 to manage Pablo Escobar’s Successor-In-Interest rights. Additionally, Escobar’s private menagerie of hippos at Hacienda Nápoles became a topic of interest and conservation efforts in Colombia.
Pablo Escobar’s estimated net worth at the time of his death was around US$30 billion.
