What Is The Song Cotton Eye Joe About? Is Cotton Eye Joe About An STD?

What Is The Song Cotton Eye Joe About?

A funniest theory alleges that country hit Cotton Eye Joe was actually a song about STDs, and the lyrics unexpectedly fit this bizarre allegation. The school disco song has provided the soundtrack to many a get-together, but a rumour circulating on the internet threatens to ruin it forever.

People allege that the Rednex remix of Cotton Eye Joe, which was first covered in 1994 and reworked in 2002, has a strange connotation about STDs. The rumour may be an unsettling legend, but the song’s lyrics are far more in tune with this chilling underlying meaning than you could ever imagine. Cotton Eye Joe is a slang phrase describing the procedure of a guy being swabbed for sexual diseases, which is the hint in the name.

Is Cotton Eye Joe About An STD?

Cotton Eye Joe, according to Urban Dictionary, is the act of a man getting his urethra swabbed to test for STDs. Or just another label for STDs because swabbing is required. It’s simple to see how this crazy theory came to be when you consider the lyrics: “If it hadn’t been for cotton-eye Joe, I’d been married a long time ago. “Where did you come from, where did you go? Where did you come from, cotton-eye Joe?” When you think things can’t get any worse, the second verse merely adds fuel to the fire:”He brought disaster wherever he went, “The hearts of the girls was to hell broken sent. “They all ran away so nobody would know, “and left only men cause of Cotton-Eye Joe.”

However, the song’s country roots can be traced far enough back to expose the STD idea as a near-certain lie. Despite the fact that the words aren’t the same as the popular Rednex version, the song is supposed to be so old that it predates the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865. The term Cotton Eye Joe was established as a result of the hit song, rather than the other way around, according to another theory about the song’s link to STDs. Cotton Eye Joe was previously a moniker for someone who had cataracts or was about to go blind and required to wear a cotton eye patch.

This indicates that the song’s original meaning had nothing to do with STD tests, allowing us to enjoy the cheesy remix once more. After we disclosed that fans of the iconic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off have formed a sinister perspective on the film, this isn’t the first absurd notion to sweep the internet. Meanwhile, morbid Grease fans have sullied the film’s innocence by saying that Sandy was actually dead the entire time.

He came to town like a midwinter storm

He rode through the fields, so handsome and strong

His eyes was his tools and his smile was his gun

But all he had come for was having some fun

History Of Cotton Eye Joe Song

Although it predates the American Civil War (1861–1865), the origins of this song remain unknown. In her 1925 book On the Trail of Negro Folk-songs, American folklorist Dorothy Scarborough stated that some persons remembered hearing the song before the war. Mrs. George Scarborough, Scarborough’s sister, told her that she learnt the song from “Negroes on a plantation in Texas, and other parts from a man in Louisiana.” The man in Louisiana had heard slaves singing the song on plantations since he was a child. There were numerous variations of both the dance and the tune.

There have been several interpretations of the word “cotton-eyed.” A black person with light blue eyes; someone with milky white eyes due to bacterial infections such as trachoma or syphilis, cataracts or glaucoma; or the contrast of dark skin tone around white eyeballs in black people. Another explanation is that “cotton eyed” refers to a procedure in which a person’s eyeball is enucleated and replaced with a cotton ball owing to a shortage of medical equipment and surgical personnel. The song was initially released in 1882 by the American publishing business Harper & Brothers. When author Louise Clarke Pyrnelle was a child, she heard it on her father’s Alabama plantation.
