A recent online rumor suggests a significant delay in the return of the Boruto anime, pushing it to 2027 or 2028. The anime, rumored to be on a brief break since March 2024, raised concerns among fans.
An interview with Studio Pierrot’s managing director, Kiero Itsumi, added to the uncertainty, indicating the studio’s focus on creating globally competitive anime and potentially adopting a seasonal format. The attention on projects like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War fueled disappointment among Boruto enthusiasts.
Fans anticipated a delay due to insufficient manga source material, but if the rumored return timeline is accurate, it exceeds expectations. However, it’s crucial to note that this information is speculative, originating from a reliable source in the community, and should be approached with skepticism until officially confirmed.
On February 15, 2024, an anime leaker claimed that the Boruto anime, previously rumored to be on a short break, is now allegedly postponed for several years, with a potential return in 2027 or 2028.
The Boruto anime started in April 2017, airing weekly episodes until March 2024, concluding with episode 293. Fans have anxiously awaited news of the anime’s return, and while some may dismiss the leak as fake, the leaker has a history of providing accurate information, including details about Boruto episode 189 in advance.
If the delay is accurate, Studio Pierrot may redirect its focus to other projects like the new Naruto anime, Black Clover, Kingdom, and Yona of the Dawn.

Boruto, a Japanese manga series, is a sequel and spin-off to Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto. Initially titled “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” it started monthly serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in May 2016, later moving to V Jump in July 2019.
In November 2020, Masashi Kishimoto took over as the writer from Ukyō Kodachi. The series concluded its first part in April 2024, returning in August with the second part titled “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex”. Boruto follows Naruto Uzumaki’s son, Boruto Uzumaki, and his ninja team.
The concept originated from Shueisha’s proposal for a Naruto sequel, initially rejected by Kishimoto. The anime adaptation, spanning 293 episodes with story supervision by Ukyō Kodachi, received acclaim for character usage. While the manga focuses on a more serious narrative, the anime begins as a prequel. Shueisha shipped a million copies of the manga series by January 2017.
Part I: Naruto Next Generations follows Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Seventh Hokage Naruto Uzumaki, as he navigates the challenges of being a ninja in Konoha. Boruto joins a team led by Konohamaru Sarutobi, accompanied by Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki.
The story unfolds with threats from Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, leading to a rescue mission for Naruto. Boruto, Sasuke, and Kages face formidable foes, revealing Boruto’s potential and marking him with the mysterious “Karma.”
In Part II: Two Blue Vortex, Kawaki becomes part of the Uzumaki family to protect him from Kara. As the story progresses, Naruto and Sasuke are defeated by Jigen, leading to Naruto’s sealing and Sasuke’s escape. Boruto, possessed by Momoshiki, engages in a battle that results in significant losses. The plot intensifies with revelations about Karma, Otsutsuki’s plans, and a mutiny within Kara.
In the aftermath, Kawaki receives a weaponized Karma from Amado, leading to a confrontation with Code. As events unfold, Boruto’s connection with Momoshiki deepens, and the village faces new threats.
Amidst conflicts, Kawaki’s intentions become questionable, and Boruto’s loyalty is tested, setting the stage for further developments. The story explores themes of family, sacrifice, and the consequences of wielding extraordinary powers.
In December 2016, during the Naruto and Boruto stage event at Jump Festa, it was revealed that the Boruto manga series would be adapted into an anime. The announcement confirmed a television series adaptation featuring an original story.
Before this, an original video animation was included in the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy (2017) video game, portraying a new mission for Boruto’s team. The TV anime, with Ukyō Kodachi overseeing the story until episode 216, is animated by Pierrot and premiered on TV Tokyo on April 5, 2017. DVD collections of the episodes began in Japan on July 26, 2017.
The English dub premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami on September 29, 2018, and in Australia, it started airing on ABC Me on September 21, 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, episode 155 and onward were delayed until July 6, 2020, as announced on April 21, 2020.
