Why was Vybz Kartel Arrested?

Vybz Kartel faced arrest in connection to the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. The prosecution claimed that Williams, allegedly involved in misplacing two guns, was murdered at Kartel’s house. Kartel’s defense argued the messages were obtained illegally, challenging their admissibility. The defense also contended that the trial judge mishandled claims of jury tampering, where a juror allegedly offered money for innocent verdicts, potentially influencing the jury.

Despite these challenges, the judge deemed the evidence admissible. Solid evidence against Kartel included ten cell phones, particularly four belonging to him, allegedly linked to Williams’ death. The legality of telecom evidence was disputed, citing violations of Jamaica’s Charter of Basic Human Rights.

Allegations of jury tampering resulted in a juror’s imprisonment. In the case history, Kartel and co-appellants claimed cellphone tampering, but the Privy Council rejected the requests in February 2024. The appeal, initially scheduled for July 2024, commenced earlier due to Kartel’s health.
