Chad Guy Daybell, a 54-year-old man, is facing accusations of first-degree murder involving his first wife, Tamara “Tammy” Douglas Daybell, and the children of his second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell. Despite the charges, he has pleaded not guilty. On June 9, 2020, the remains of the children, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow, were discovered on Daybell’s property. He was arrested on that day and initially charged with “conspiracy to commit murder” in connection to the children’s deaths.
Later, while in custody, he faced additional charges of first-degree murder. Tylee was 17 years old and JJ was 7 when they were killed. Tylee was last seen with Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, in Yellowstone National Park, a day before Cox visited Daybell’s property, where Tylee’s remains were later found. Daybell was born in Provo, Utah, and grew up in Springville, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young University after studying communication.
In 1992, Daybell and his brothers were featured in a profile by the Deseret News, highlighting their work digging graves in Springville’s cemetery, where Daybell later served as a sexton. He was known for his role as caretaker of the cemetery, especially during the Halloween season, and he expressed the solemnity of burying infants in an interview in 2001.
According to employment records, Daybell had multiple periods of working at Springville’s cemetery before resigning in 2014. In 2015, his family relocated to Idaho. During his college years, Daybell wrote a book titled “One Foot In The Grave” about his experiences in the cemetery. He also penned personal memoirs, including accounts of his near-death experiences.
Additionally, he authored a series of books aimed at a religious audience, focusing on the topic of the end times. Daybell’s self-published titles were still available on Amazon as of April 3. In 1990, Daybell married Tammy Daybell at the Manti Utah Temple, and they primarily resided in Utah throughout their marriage. They established a book company in 2004 and eventually moved to Salem, Idaho, in 2015.
After Tammy Daybell’s death in Idaho in 2019, she was laid to rest in Springville, her childhood hometown, merely three days later. She had been married to Chad for 28 years. Less than three weeks after Tammy’s passing, Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow in Hawaii. Seven months later, on June 9, 2020, the remains of JJ and Tylee were discovered buried in Chad’s backyard, leading to his arrest.
Initially, both accused individuals were intended to be tried together, with shared witnesses and evidence. However, an Idaho judge later decided to separate their cases. As of now, Chad Daybell’s trial date has not been scheduled.
Chad Daybell remains incarcerated at Fremont County Jail. Recently, Judge Steven W. Boyce presided over a motion filed by Daybell’s defense team, requesting a change of venue from Fremont County to Ada County due to the case’s high profile. The motion was granted, and Daybell’s trial will now take place in Ada County, as reported by KPVI and the Rexburg Standard Journal.
Following his arrest in June 2020, Daybell’s bail was initially set at $1 million. He was required to stay in the local area and wear an ankle monitor. After human remains were discovered on his property, he was booked into Fremont County Jail, according to East Idaho News. The recent Netflix docuseries titled “Sins of Our Mother” focuses on Colby Ryan confronting his mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, regarding the deaths of her children, J.J. Vallow and Tylee Ryan.
While the series primarily revolves around Vallow Daybell, it also highlights the involvement of Chad Daybell in the case. J.J. and Tylee went missing in September 2019, and their bodies were subsequently found on June 9, 2020, buried in Daybell’s yard. Both Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in relation to the deaths of J.J., Tylee, and Chad’s late wife, Tammy Daybell.
Originally, Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell were scheduled to be tried together in Ada County starting in January 2024. However, their trials were separated. Vallow Daybell’s trial commenced in April, and in May, she was found guilty of murder, conspiracy, and grand theft at the conclusion of the trial, according to Deseret News.
Yes, Chad Daybell is in jail right now. The lone juror who initially held out in Lori Vallow’s murder trial has now disclosed the reason for changing his stance and ultimately convicting the mother. Saul Hernandez, in an interview with Good Morning America, revealed that he was the only juror initially unconvinced of the prosecution’s case against Vallow. However, after just seven hours of deliberation, Hernandez became convinced of Vallow’s guilt.
Throughout the trial, Hernandez admitted finding it increasingly difficult to even look at Vallow as more and more distressing evidence was presented. He described the experience as putting a face to evil, challenging his understanding of good and bad, and confronting the concept of good versus evil for the first time in his life.
One particular aspect that deeply disturbed Hernandez was seeing photographs of Vallow and her new husband, Chad Daybell, smiling during their beach wedding just weeks after the children were killed. Hernandez expressed his disgust towards these images. The trial took place at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho, and Vallow was ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy, grand theft, and conspiracy to murder Chad Daybell’s first wife, Tammy Daybell. The convictions relate to the deaths of Vallow’s daughter, Tylee Ryan (16), her son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow (seven), and the conspiracy to murder Tammy Daybell.
Yes, Chad Daybell is alive. The nation was captivated by the case of 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and her 7-year-old brother, JJ Vallow, who went missing. Their mother, Lori Vallow, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, remained tight-lipped about the children’s whereabouts. After months of searching, the children’s bodies were tragically discovered buried in Daybell’s backyard in Rexburg, Idaho.
Both Vallow and Daybell have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with their deaths, and they have pleaded not guilty. After a year of staying silent in the public eye, Chad Daybell’s five adult children, who firmly believe in their father’s innocence, decided to speak out for the first time on “48 Hours.” They feel the need to be a voice for their father and shed light on what they believe is the truth.
The Daybell siblings, consisting of Emma, Mark, Leah, Seth, and Garth, want to share their side of the story. They are determined to explain how they think Tylee and JJ’s remains ended up in their father’s backyard and why they believe he is innocent. They argue that he was ensnared in a web of murder and deceit.
Prior to the authorities descending upon their father’s property in search of the missing children, the Daybell children considered themselves an ordinary Mormon family residing in Rexburg, Idaho. However, their lives have been forever altered since then. In the interview, Emma Murray expresses how people now treat them as if they have committed terrible crimes.
They face constant threats, including messages on social media threatening harm to their children. Their father, Chad Daybell, stands accused of one of the most heinous crimes that this community has ever seen: the murder of Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow. Despite these accusations, the Daybell children vehemently believe that their father is incapable of such acts.
While acknowledging that the evidence may appear damning, Emma Murray reminds everyone that this is only one side of the story. The Daybell siblings are here to present their father’s perspective and shed light on their understanding of how Tylee and JJ’s remains ended up on their father’s property. Their stepmother, Lori Vallow, plays a significant role in this story.
The world has come to know her as the “doomsday mom” who refused to disclose the children’s whereabouts. She now faces charges alongside Chad Daybell for the alleged murder of her own two children. However, April Raymond, a former close friend of Lori’s, remembers her differently. She recalls Lori as a loving and devoted mother, perplexed by what could have changed.
According to sources, the decision to separate the trials of Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow was prompted by new DNA testing. All parties involved in the criminal case were provided with this new evidence. In light of this development, the attorneys for Daybell and Vallow expressed the need for additional time to conduct their own testing on the DNA evidence.
Judge Boyce agreed to the request, considering that the new evidence had not been presented in a timely manner. While Lori Vallow chose to proceed with her right to a speedy trial, her trial remained scheduled for April 3, 2024. However, Chad Daybell’s trial was vacated, and a new date will be set in the future, as reported by the East Idaho News.
Judge Boyce explained that he had carefully considered the rights of both defendants in the case and had determined that severance was the only viable option. As a result, Daybell’s trial could potentially be delayed by up to six months from March 2024. April Raymond met Lori in Hawaii in 2015 when Lori was married to Charles Vallow, a businessman, and they were raising Tylee and JJ.
According to Raymond, Lori was an ideal mother, particularly to JJ, who had autism. However, Raymond noticed a shift in Lori’s behavior around 2017, coinciding with her introduction to Chad Daybell’s books. Daybell, a former gravedigger turned author, wrote religious narratives focused on the world’s destruction.
Chad Daybell’s religious beliefs gradually became more extreme over time. He professed the ability to communicate with the deceased and foresee the future. Witnesses claim that he spoke about dark spirits and zombies. Chad held the belief that certain individuals on Earth were not who they appeared to be. Their souls were supposedly vacant, replaced by evil forces.
According to his belief, the only way to release their spirits to heaven was by killing their physical bodies. Lori met Chad Daybell around 2018, and friends noted her growing devotion to him, bordering on cult-like. She became a fan of his writing and engaged in podcasts with him. Eventually, she began discussing dark spirits, zombies, and her belief that she had been chosen by God for a special mission.
Lori held firm to the conviction that she was destined to lead the 144,000 survivors after the apocalypse, guiding them to eternal life while the rest of society perished. She also believed that she had a darker role to fulfill: eliminating darkness, demons, and evil. According to April Raymond, Lori confided in her that her husband, Charles Vallow, was possessed by a demon. Charles, feeling alarmed by Lori’s behavior, sought help from the police.
An encounter between Charles and the police was recorded, capturing Charles expressing concerns about his safety and the well-being of his children. Despite the mounting evidence and public perception, the Daybell siblings stand united in their belief in their father’s innocence. They are determined to tell their side of the story and shed light on how they think Tylee and JJ’s remains ended up on their father’s property. For them, Chad Daybell’s meeting with Lori and subsequent marriage was a turning point, leading to devastating consequences.
