The search for missing aristocrat Constance Marten, her boyfriend, and their baby took an unexpected turn after Marten and her lover were discovered in Brighton without the child. Constance comes from a wealthy landowner family. Constance Marten’s grand parents Mary Anna Marten was the late Queen Mother’s goddaughter and a trustee of the British Museum.
On September 12, 1929, she was born and joined the Buckingham Palace Brownies unit, alongside Princess Margaret. Mary Anna inherited the Crichel House Estate in Dorset after her father, Baron Alington, died in active service in the RAF in 1940.
Mary made legal history in the Crichel Down case, which saw her reclaim her family’s home after it was forcibly purchased by the government for bomb training in 1938. At the age of 80, she died in January 2010.
Napier Marten, Constance’s dad, was born on March 28, 1959, as the son of George and Mary Marten. He was educated at Eton and has five sisters. Napier was Queen’s page and heir to the Crichel Estate in Dorset, and the family’s £115 million fortune. He sold his fortune to live in Australia. In 1986, he married Virginie Camu, and Constance was born a year later. He abandoned his family when Constance was only nine years old. Napier and Virginie are no longer married. Virginie Charlotte Camu married Napier in 1986 after being born on September 14, 1959.
Constance’s younger brother is Maximilian. In August 2021, he married jewellery designer Ruth Aymer at York House in Richmond. Max works in green real estate. Freddie, his brother, attended his wedding. Tobias is the youngest child of Napier and Virginie. His last known job was running a tree care company with his father.
Constance Marten and Mark Gordon fled on the 5th of January after their car caught fire on the highway. The car is what sparked the initial search for the couple and their newborn baby. The couple had been on the run for nearly two months before being apprehended on Monday night. After someone saw them, Sussex police arrested them in Brighton. They were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect. However, after the baby’s remains were discovered, they may now face a manslaughter charge.
After being on the run since January, Constance Marten was finally apprehended on February 27, 2024, with her boyfriend Mark Gordon. Police arrested the couple on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence after discovering ‘baby remains’ near where they were discovered earlier this week.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Metropolitan Police, “This afternoon, police officers searching a wooded area close to where Constance and Mark Gordon were arrested discovered the remains of a baby.”
“A post mortem examination will be held in due course. A crime scene is in place and work at the location is expected to continue for some time.”
