Gerald Norman Springer (February 13, 1944 – April 27, 2024) was a versatile American personality, known for his roles as a broadcaster, journalist, actor, producer, lawyer, and politician.
He was born in London, England, during World War II to parents who were refugees fleeing from the Holocaust, and he grew up in Queens, New York City. After attending Northwestern University School of Law and becoming a qualified lawyer, Springer began his political career by working for Robert Kennedy’s campaign in 1968.
Springer served as a member of the Cincinnati City Council and went on to become the 56th Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978. He also worked as a local news anchor in Cincinnati, winning several Regional Emmy Awards for his commentary.
However, he was best known as the host of the sensational tabloid talk show, Jerry Springer, which aired from 1991 to 2018 and was infamous for its controversial content.
Springer also served as the host of America’s Got Talent from 2007 to 2008, and hosted the courtroom show, Judge Jerry, from 2019 to 2022. In addition, he hosted the Jerry Springer Podcast from 2015 to 2022. Springer was regarded as a pioneer in the development of “trash TV,” and his show was a major hit and cultural phenomenon in the 1990s.
Jerry Springer, like many couples, has experienced both positive and negative aspects in his married life. He was married twice, first to Micki Velton and then to Cathy Lynn Guisewite.
Jerry and Micki’s marriage lasted for almost two decades before they parted ways in 1994. Although the actual reason for their divorce was not made public, some speculate that Jerry’s demanding work schedule may have been a contributing factor. However, the former couple has maintained a cordial relationship and even collaborated on a few projects after their separation.
In contrast, Jerry’s marriage to Cathy has been more enduring, lasting for more than 45 years. They first met when Jerry was a city councilman in Cincinnati, and Cathy was a television producer. They exchanged vows in 1976, and despite Jerry’s controversial profession as a talk show host, they have been able to sustain a strong bond in their relationship.
Contrary to popular belief, Jerry Springer was not married to Connie Chung. In fact, his first wife was television reporter Micki Velton whom he met on a blind date in 1969, and they got married in 1973. The couple welcomed their daughter Katie Springer in 1976, who was born with disabilities.
After being together for 21 years, Jerry and Micki separated and got divorced in 1994. Following their divorce, Jerry never remarried, while Micki tied the knot with Adam Yenkin in 2006.
On the other hand, Connie Chung is happily married to television journalist Maury Povich since December 1984. They are considered as one of the most powerful couples in the media industry and have been together for more than four decades. Connie has worked for several big television networks including NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN, while Maury hosted the controversial talk show “Maury” from 1991 to 2022.
Despite Jerry Springer’s reputation for stirring up drama on his talk show, his love for his daughter Katie Springer was unwavering. Jerry and his wife Micki Velton welcomed their only child in 1976, three years after they got married. Katie was born with health issues and is legally blind and deaf in one ear. However, her parents ensured that she received all the necessary support.
In a 2006 interview with Access Hollywood, Katie shared that her parents never treated her differently and made sure she knew she was not any different from others. Although Jerry gained fame through his political career and television ventures, his family preferred to stay away from the limelight. Nevertheless, when Jerry participated in season 3 of Dancing With the Stars in September 2006, he credited his daughter as the reason for his involvement.
At present, Jerry Springer is 79 years old. Jerry Springer was born on February 13, 1944, in the Highgate station of the London Underground during World War II when it was being used as a shelter from German bombing. He grew up on Chandos Road in East Finchley, London. His parents, Margot and Richard Springer, were German-Jewish refugees who fled from Landsberg an der Warthe, Prussia (now Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland) during the war.
Sadly, Jerry’s maternal grandmother, Marie Kallmann, was left behind and died in the gas vans of the Chełmno extermination camp in German-occupied Poland. His paternal grandmother, Selma Springer (née Elkeles), passed away at the hospital in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in German-occupied Czechoslovakia. Selma’s brother, Hermann Elkeles, was a well-known doctor in Berlin and also died at the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
Jerry Springer has been tight-lipped about his relationship with his ex-wife, Micki Velton, and the details of their divorce. They met on a blind date in 1969 when Velton was 23 years old and working as an administrative aid for Procter & Gamble. Springer was then running for a seat in the Cincinnati City Council. The couple dated for four years before getting married in 1973.
Their marriage lasted for around 21 years before they separated in 1994. While some people speculated that the scandal surrounding Springer’s involvement with sex workers led to their divorce, this is unlikely since they remained married for many years after the scandal. It seems more probable that they drifted apart, given that they got married at a young age.
It is not known whether Velton lives close to Springer in the Chicago area or what her current occupation is. She is currently 77 years old and has not publicly commented on Springer’s passing.
