Macklemore, born Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, is an accomplished American rapper, singer, and songwriter originally from Seattle, Washington. He began his career in 2000 as an independent artist, releasing several works, including “Open Your Eyes,” “The Language of My World,” and “The Unplanned Mixtape.” However, it was his collaboration with producer Ryan Lewis as the duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis that brought him international success. Together, they released several hit songs and albums, including the Grammy-winning “The Heist.” In 2017, Macklemore made a return to the music industry with his single “Glorious,” featuring Skylar Grey. This marked his first major single produced without Lewis since his breakthrough in the mainstream music scene.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis decided to go their separate ways as they felt they needed some creative space. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ended their collaboration in 2017 after working together for ten years to give each other “creative space.” “We needed a break,” Macklemore said, explaining how spending almost every day together for a decade was intense. Being honest and comfortable with each other can also be daunting at times, and both of them needed space. Ryan initiated the split, and initially, Macklemore was overwhelmed, wondering what he would do next.
Macklemore stated on Instagram that he and Ryan agreed that it would be beneficial for both of them. Despite their split, Macklemore emphasized that Ryan Lewis will always be his brother. After their collaboration ended, Ryan Lewis went on to produce numerous hit songs, including Kesha’s “Praying” and others. “Ryan and I agreed that some creative space would be good for the both of us.” He posted on Instagram. He added that Ryan Lewis is his brother forever and they have been working together damn near every day for nine years, and it felt like the right time. Aside from Macklemore, Lewis also went on to produce several songs, including Kesha’s “Praying,” and more.
Ryan Scott Lewis, born on March 25, 1988, is a multi-talented artist from America. He wears many hats, including record producer, DJ, videographer, photographer, music video director, graphic designer, rapper, and songwriter. As part of the duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lewis produced their albums The VS. EP, The Heist, and This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, in addition to producing his own album, Instrumentals. In 2008, Lewis released his first extended play, Instrumentals, which featured four alternative hip-hop tracks. The same year, Ryan collaborated with Rhode Island-based rapper Symmetry on a self-titled LP. Lewis later pursued photography and videography as professional ventures.
In 2017, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis decided to split, despite achieving many successes together, including multiple No. 1 hits and Grammy awards. Following their split, Macklemore produced his album “Gemini” in June 2017, which received less critical acclaim than his previous collaborations with Lewis. To compensate for the lack of star power, Macklemore collaborated with artists such as Skylar Grey, Lil Yachty, and Kesha. Throughout this period, Macklemore remained sober and worked on strengthening his relationships. Ryan Lewis also continued to produce music and co-wrote Kesha’s “Praying,” her first single after a highly-publicized legal dispute with her record label.
Fortunately, it seems Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are still on good terms despite their split, as per some of the sources. According to some sources, in 2020, Macklemore expressed in his statement about their decision to part ways that this decision came from a place of love for one another. At that time, Macklemore added, “I’m the best man at his wedding next month. There will be more M&RL music to come when the time is right.”
