The Xbox One X is a powerful home console that outperforms the PlayStation 4 Pro in terms of processing power and easily outperforms the Xbox One S. It can play games in native 4K resolution, with some titles running at 60 frames per second. It’s still an Xbox One, so it’ll play all of the console’s current games and includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
The console was released in November 2013. The Xbox One X is a true beast of a gaming computer, with eight 2.3GHz processing cores, a six-teraflop graphics processor, and 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. Aside from its size, that RAM is also speedier than the Xbox One’s 5GB. Because of its processing capability, the Xbox One X will be lightning fast. For example, earlier this year, a beefed-up Forza Motorsport 6 demo running at native 4K resolution and 60fps still had more than 30% of its processing power left over.
Even on Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, the Xbox One X makes full use of its processing capacity. That means frame rates should never drop below their maximum, and dynamic resolution decreases should never be necessary. This will be a significant benefit even for gamers who don’t have access to a 4K display. However, unlike the PS4 Pro, this strategy means that previous games must be evaluated and optimized for the Xbox One X, as they may not run by default. That could indicate that a tiny percentage of games are incompatible similar to Xbox 360 games on Xbox One.
Dolby Atmos and a proprietary Microsoft sound codec called HRTF provide spatial surround sound on the Xbox. Dolby Atmos is all about giving surround sound height and pinpointing sound effects placement in a 3D environment. To get Atmos going, you’ll need to add ceiling or upward-firing speakers to an existing surround system, which usually means at least 7 speakers. Still, support for Dolby Atmos for Headphones suggests that those of us who aren’t willing/able/allowed to fill our lounge with speakers should still be able to get in on the awesome Atmos action.
